PRESS RELEASE

Angie Lawless Announces Campaign for House District 59

Democrat Angie Lawless, an accomplished entrepreneur, attorney, and longtime community leader, today announced her campaign for Tennessee House District 59, seeking to succeed retiring state Rep. Caleb Hemmer, a Democrat.

“I am concerned about the affordability crisis facing Tennesseans and I am tired of politics as usual,” Lawless said. “I am ready to give back to this city and state that has given me so much,” she added.

Our Campaign's Top Issues

Affordable Child Care

Every family deserves access to affordable, high-quality child care. I’m committed to expanding programs that give parents peace of mind, support early childhood development, and help families thrive economically. By investing in childcare infrastructure, we ensure that parents can work without worrying about their children’s safety and growth, while giving every child the strong start they deserve.

Safe classrooms, funded schools and healthy children:

Every kid, no matter where they live or what home they grow up in, should have access to top-notch teachers, safe classrooms, and full stomachs. We need to fully fund our public schools so every child has a real opportunity to succeed. That has to be our priority—especially when we’re making decisions about tax breaks and how we spend our budget. We have a responsibility to treat our public schools like Tennessee’s future is counting on them—because it is.

Healthcare Access and Affordability

I will prioritize expanding affordable, quality health care in TN by pushing Medicaid expansion,  increasing the number of providers, requiring more transparency from insurance companies as they set their premiums.

Equitable Taxation

If we’re serious about affordability, we should be cutting taxes on groceries and gas—not handing out tax breaks to out-of-state corporations. Tennessee has given away billions in corporate tax incentives while refusing to lower the everyday costs families feel at the checkout line and at the pump.

Reliable Infrastructure

Strong infrastructure is the backbone of thriving communities. I’m committed to investing in roads, bridges, broadband, and public transit that connect our neighborhoods, support local businesses, and create good-paying jobs. Our community deserves safe streets and modern facilities that meet today’s needs and tomorrow’s growth.

Smart Growth and Affordability

Tennesseans are struggling with the cost of everything - groceries, gas, medicine, and housing. I will focus on bringing better paying jobs to TN and lowering taxes and costs for everyday Tennesseans. We also need to be intentional with our growth and make sure we protect what makes our communities special.

Affordable Health Care

Access to quality health care should never depend on your zip code or income. Angie supports expanding Medicaid so more Tennesseans can access affordable coverage. She will also work to increase the number of providers, especially in underserved areas, and push for greater transparency from insurance companies when they set premiums and deny care.
